Takarazuka’s first performance took place on 1 April 1914 in a converted indoor swimming pool at Takarazuka Shin-Onsen. The official introduction records that seventeen girls performed there. The stage began as part of a leisure complex, before today’s purpose-built theaters.
One of the first pieces, Donburako, was a fairy-tale opera based on Momotaro. A familiar story was one of the ways early audiences could enter this new world of theater.
